While in Aswan we visited a number of other sights.  These included the Aswan High Dam, the Unfinished Obelisk and the Temple of Philae.

To us, the High Dam looked like any other dam.  Not too impressive.  However, it is VERY important to Egypt as it changed the course and flow of the Nile and had major changes on the lives of the people on both sides of the dam.  The construction of the dam created Lake Nasser.  (A little more on this on the Abu Simbel page.)

One requirement of an obelisk is that it must be a single piece of stone.  The Unfinished Obelisk was going to be the largest obelisk ever.  However, it cracked while being chiseled out of the ground.  As a result it was just discarded and left as a future tourist attraction.

The Temples of Philae are located on the island of Philae south of Aswan.  Because they are some of the newer temples we visited, they were in better condition.  They were built around 300 - 200 bc
